With the upcoming of the 45th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil, the Confucius Institute co-established by Nankai University and the Federal University of Ceará was opened in Fortaleza, Brazil on April 10th, 2019. Consul-General of Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Recife Yan Yuqing, Vice President Li Jing, cultural counsellor of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Federative Republic of Brazil Shu Jianping, Rector of Federal University of Ceará Henry Campos, etc. attended the establishment ceremony. Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) sent congratulations in letter to the establishment of the institute. More than 200 faculty members and students of Brazil universities and other Confucius Institutes witnessed the historical moment.
Yan Yuqing said that Brazil is an important country on the extension line of the “Maritime Silk Road” of South America. As a landing point of the “Maritime Silk Road” on South American continent, many areas of the State of Ceará enjoy broad prospects. He hoped the institute could play a more active role in promoting China-Brazil friendly relations and the “Belt and Road” Initiative.
On behalf of Nankai University, Li Jing extended congratulations to the establishment of the Confucius Institute as well as sincere gratitude to the support of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Federative Republic of Brazil, Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Recife and Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). He pointed out that language and culture are keys and foundations to connecting two peoples. The Confucius Institute has established a bridge between the two peoples through language and culture. He believed that the institute would give full play of its platform effect and open up a new route for interschool cooperation.
The Confucius Institute at Federal University of Ceará is the 9th Confucius Institute of Nankai University as well as the 10th Confucius Institute in Brazil.
On April 11th, the Confucius Institute at Federal University of Ceará held its first council. Vice President Li Jing and Rector Henry Campos, etc. attended the conference.
On April 12th, the delegation of Nankai University paid a visit to Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, and had a meeting with the special consultant of university’s president in international affairs, and Chinese and Brazilian Deans of the Confucius Institute of the university.

The Confucius Institute at Yeditepe University (CIYU) was launched on September 27th, 2017, with over 220 members of faculty and students witnessing the historic moment on the eve of the Global Confucius Institute Day. The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China Mr. YU Hongyang and the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Istanbul Mr. QIAN Bo attended the opening ceremony in the company of Mr. Bedrettin DALAN, the Founding and Honorary President, and Professor Canan Aykut BİNGÖL, the Rector of Yeditepe University. Vice Chancellor and Vice President Yang Kexin also attended the ceremony and gave a speech.
Located in Istanbul, Turkey, Yeditepe University was established by the İstanbul Education and Culture Foundation (İSTEK Vakfı) and served as a well-known and prestigious foundation university with the longest history and the highest number of enrolled students. The Confucius Institute at Yeditepe University is the fourth Confucius Institute in Turkey and also the eight official Confucius Institute of Nankai University.

The Confucius Institute at Aichi University was established in February, 2006. It’s one of the earliest ones in Japanese 12 Confucius Institutes.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Minho was established in 2006 and is the first one in Portugal.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Los Andes was founded in November, 2017 in Bogota, Colombia. It is the first one in South America.

The Neoma Confucius Institute for Business was founded in March, 2014 in Rouen, France. It is the first Confucius Institute for business in France.
The 10th Anniversary Joint Meeting of the Seven Nankai University Confucius Institutes and the Photo Exhibition for the 10th Anniversary of Confucius Institutes were held at Nankai University in September, 2014.
The 6th Nankai University Confucius Institutes conference was held at the University of Maryland, US in October, 2014.
The agreement on co-establishing a new Confucius Institute by Nankai University and Yeditepe University, Turkey was signed in July, 2015.
In November, 2004, under the support of Hanban, Nankai University co-established the first Confucius Institute in North America with the University of Maryland, initiating the history of Nankai University undertaking the establishment of Confucius institutes. Over the past ten years, Nankai University has co-established successively seven Confucius Institutes, namely, the Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland, USA, the Confucius Institute at Aichi University, Japan, the Confucius Institute at the University of Minho, Portugal, the Confucius Institute at the University of Los Andes, Colombia, the Confucius Institute at Cheju Halla University, South Korea, the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow, UK, and the Neoma Confucius Institute for Business in Rouen, France. As the “most stable, effective and direct mode for Chinese culture going overseas”, Confucius Institutes play a comprehensive role of cultural exchange between China and the host countries. Moreover, they also serve as a new exchange platform for Nankai University to cooperate with foreign universities, promoting, to a large degree, the internationalization process of Nankai University.
Nankai University attaches great importance to the work of the Confucius Institute, and has set up a leading group for Chinese Language International promotion, Chancellor XUE Jinwen acted as the leader. The work of Confucius Institute has been listed into the Twelfth Five-year Plan of Nankai University. The Institute for Cross-cultural Communication was established as the base for the promotion of Chinese language. The Office for Confucius Institutes’ Affairs is also officially established, responsible for the operation and management of its Confucius institutes. The seven Confucius Institute each has its own characteristics and develops very well, thus attracting a large number of foreigners to study Chinese language and culture. Nankai University also plays an active role in fields like cross-cultural studies and Hanban faculty training etc. Because of the great efforts and accomplishments Nankai University has made in the past years, it has been honored five times at the annual Confucius Institute Conference “Award of Excellent Confucius Institute”, “Advanced Confucius Institute”, “Advanced Individual (dean) of Confucius Institute”. Besides, it has also been conferred the "Advanced Chinese partner University of Confucius Institute" award on the 7th Global Confucius Institutes Conference in December, 2012. Chancellor XUE Jinwen received the “Person of the Year” award on the 8th Global Confucius Institutes Conference in December, 2013.
Over the past ten years, Nankai University, guided and greatly supported by the Minstry of Education and Hanban, and taking its Confucius Instituttes as platform for comprehensive cultural exchange, has made a remarkable performance in introducting and demonstrating China and Chinese culture to the outside worlds. People at Nankai are ready to welcome the next ten years of Confucius Institutes with even greater enthusiam.
Since signed the agreement and held the opening ceremony in November, 2007, under the support and help of Hanban, the Chinese partner university-Nankai University, Embassy of China in Colombia and University of Los Andes, our Confucius Institute has made many significant achievements in the aspects of language teaching, Chinese culture teaching, cultural activities, school exchanges, teaching material writing and etc., and has been recognized and highly praised by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and all parties.

In March 28 2014, a Confucius Institute co-founded by Nankai University and Neoma Business School was inaugurated in the French city of Rouen. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, Director of Hanban (Chinese Language Council International), Director-General of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Xu Lin, inaugurated jointly for the Confucius Institute. Chancellor of Nankai University and International Chinese promotion group leader Xue Jinwen also attended the inauguration. More than 500 delegates from all sectors of society witnessed this historical moment, including Chinese Embassy in France, Minister Counselor Ma Yansheng, President of the Normandy region of France Nicholas, Chairman of the Economic Community of Rouen Sanchez, French Ambassador in China Lin Bai, School board chairman Bernard and Principal Bo Siding of Neoma Business School etc. The Confucius Institute of Neoma Business School is the 7th Confucius Institute that established by Nankai University in the world and is the only Confucius Institute of Nankai University that has business characteristics.

The Confucius Institute at Aichi University, established in April, 2006, is the forth Confucius institute in Japan. The April of 2014 witnessed its eighth birthday. Looking back, we have every reason to say that we are successful and the achievements we have obtained over the past years far exceed our initial expectations. Up to now, the Confucius Institute at Aichi University, as one of the biggest Confucius institutes in Japan, has already fostered more than 10,000 Chinese learners at Nagoya and its surrounding areas. Due to its well-known reputation and far-reaching influence, it has received high praises from the national Hanban, Nankai University as well as Aichi University.

The Confucius Institute, with the guidance of Hanban, has carried out all kinds of Chinese language teaching and cultural promotion activities based on the condition of Portugal, overall motivates the interest of people from all classes in Portugal in learning Chinese and understanding China, which makes the Confucius Institute become the bridge between China and Portugal in culture exchanges. After nearly eight years of operation, the Confucius Institute has gained a wealth of experience in promoting and deepening Chinese teaching through professional disciplines exchanges between universities from China and Portugal, developing extensive cooperation between multiple agencies and institutions. The Confucius Institute has won a good reputation in the local and promoted the friendship between China and Portugal.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow was established in October 2011. Chief Minister of Scotland Mr. Alexander Salmond, Chinese Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Scotland Mr. Li Ruiyou, and a delegation from Nankai University led by its President Professor Gong Ke and Vice President Professor Zhu Guanglei, along with members of the academic community attended the unveil ceremony.
The overarching aim of the Confucius Institute at the University is to promote understanding of contemporary China. Its specific goals are to increase the numbers of Chinese language learners in Scotland, to organize a wide range of public events, and to work with schools, cultural organizations and businesses to foster engagement with China.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland (CIM) was founded on November 17, 2004 and is the first Confucius Institute in North America. From 2004 to 2014, CIM has gone though ten years of history. The Confucius Institute at Maryland (CIM) is proud of its designation as the first Confucius Institute. This year will be a particularly exciting year for the CIM because it will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its establishment. Since it was established ten years ago, it has steadily grown with the generous support of both Hanban and friends of the University of Maryland.
