Course Overview
The Introduction to Environmental Science a basic course of Environmental Science and Engineering, as well as a general education course of fundamental environmental knowledge for the public. The basic and fundamental course of Environmental Science introduces the basic concepts and knowledge involved in the field of Environmental Science and Engineering from the macro, meso and micro levels. At the same time, it pays attention to the development of national environmental protection strategy and the frontiers of Environmental Science and Engineering.
This course is based on the key environmental education and national environmental science disciplines of Nankai University as one of the first universities to carry out environmental education in China. Since setting in 1979, with inheritance and development, this course has been continually exploring and improving its teaching quality. From 1999 to 2005, it was gradually established as a model excellent course of Nankai University and of Tianjin. In 2009, it was rated as a national excellent course, and in 2019, it was chosen as a national excellent open online course. Since the start of the course website construction in 2001, the excellent online course teaching website, national resource sharing course and MOOC had been gradually established from 2005 to 2016. A curriculum education training system was established through the combination of classroom teaching and online education.
The lecturer, Professor Ju Meiting, is the deputy chairman of the Environmental Science and Engineering Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, the leader of the national teaching team, and the leader of the national excellent course. He has won the first prize of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Tianjin Teaching Achievements, Tianjin Outstanding Teacher, Tianjin Model Worker, Baosteel Excellent Teacher Award, Outstanding Teacher Award of Nankai University and other awards.
The basic content of The Introduction to Environmental Science are: the earth resources and environmental problems (4 class hours), air pollution and prevention (3 class hours), water pollution and control (4 class hours), soil pollution and control (4 class hours), soil waste pollution and control (3 class hours), noise pollution and control (3 class hours), sustainable development strategies (4 class hours) and offline teacher-student exchange meeting (7 class hours).
By studying this course, students can systematically understand the basic concepts, theories and methods of Environmental Science and Engineering and understand the development of national environmental protection strategies and cutting-edge demands and research progress. At the same time, through offline and online exchanges, they can talk with lecturers to communicate about classroom knowledge, career development and national demands, and obtain comprehensive guidance on learning and life.
Course Objectives
At the macro level, the course is aimed to guide students to establish correct views of world, nature and the earth, helping them realize the irreplaceable value of the environment to mankind. At the meso-level, students can master the basic principles and idea of regional planning and environmental management. At the micro level, students can learn and understand various technologies for environmental protection.
