Temperature test, sanitizer spraying, test sample transfer, rubbish cleaning … All these jobs can be done by Xiao An!

Who is Xiao An?

“Xiao An” is actually an anti-epidemic teleoperation robot created by the team of Prof. Feng Duan, from Nankai University’s College of Artificial Intelligence. It has successfully completed some functional tests.

According to Prof. Feng Duan, the robot Xiao An is able to effectively assist medical staff in their daily work, decreasing labor costs, and to a certain extent, reducing the high risk of infection faced by the medical staff on the frontline of the fight against the coronavirus epidemic.

As can be seen in the test, the robot Xiao An with an LCD “head” and two mechanic “arms” is able to flexibly move indoors, operated by a cellphone. It has functions of infrared body temperature detection, primary diagnosis, sanitizer spraying, test sample transfer, rubbish removal, etc. It can also use the camera equipped on the body to observe the ward in real time and assist doctors to conduct “tele-consultations”.

Prof. Feng Duan said the AI is able to provide strong support for the prevention and control of the coronavirus epidemic. The robot “Xiao An” showed in the test is still a sample machine at present, and it will be optimized and enhanced based on the medical staff’s professional advices. Supporting for the prevention and control of the coronavirus pandemic is an initiative of Prof. Feng Duan and his team. As Nankai’s scientific researchers, they hope to contribute their wisdom and strength in fighting off the epidemic.

For now, the industrial design of Xiao An’s appearance is done and the trial manufacture has started. In the next phase, Prof. Feng Duan’s team will promote the robot for medical application.
