On October 24, the 2020 annual academic meeting of the Tianjin Mathematical Society opened in the academic lecture hall on the second floor of CIM (Chern Institute of Mathematics) at Nankai University. More than 160 people attended the opening, including Yuan Yaxiang, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and researcher of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Zhang Jiping, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor from Peking University; Long Yiming and Zhang Weiping, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professors of Nankai University; Lu Shuangying, member and vice president of the Tianjin Association for Science and Technology; Liu Yuangang, vice minister of the academy department in the Tianjin Association for Science and Technology, as well as representatives of executive directors. The opening ceremony was hosted by Duan Huagui, Secretary General of the Tianjin Mathematical Society.
At the opening ceremony, Lu Shuangying stressed the importance of basic research in mathematics and stated that the Tianjin Association for Science and Technology would continue supporting the development of basic fields such as mathematics and technological innovation.
Zhang Jiping suggested that local mathematical societies strengthen academic exchanges and the training of young mathematicians to promote the development of mathematics. He proposed to secure and increase academic exchanges and cooperation in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei mathematical academia so as to exert greater impact on mathematics.
Member Long Yiming reviewed the history of the Tianjin Mathematical Society, especially Professor Shiing-Shen Chern’s support for the Society and also his hope for the development of Chinese mathematics. Long anticipated the young generation carrying out the unfulfilled wishes of Professor Chern to produce original work with far-reaching influence.
You Jiangong, professor of Nankai University and director general of the Tianjin Mathematical Society, summed up the work of the city's Mathematical Society for 2019-2020, and acknowledged the achievements accomplished by all colleagues of the Tianjin Mathematical Society in aspects of discipline construction, talent training, research awards and academic exchanges.
On the afternoon of the 24th, the online breakout sessions were divided into four groups: Basic Mathematics and Combination Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Secondary Mathematics”, with over 150 Tianjin university and high school teachers and college students participating.
Funded and supported by the Tianjin Association for Science and Technology, this annual meeting was organized by the Tianjin Mathematical Society and undertaken by Nankai University via online and offline platforms. This annual meeting also introduced some profound mathematical questions and cutting-edge research methods for participants by inviting top experts in China to deliver academic lectures. It offered the majority of mathematics in Tianjin a chance for academic communication and studies, thus promoting exchanges and lifting the level of scientific research.
