A few days ago, the Ministry of Education announced the results of the filing and approval of undergraduate majors in ordinary colleges and universities in 2020. Nankai University was approved to establish three undergraduate majors, namely “Journalism”, “Internet and New Media” and “Crypto Science and Technology”.

“Journalism” and “Internet and New Media” are undergraduate majors set up by the College of Journalism and Communication of Nankai University. At present, a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation are reshaping the ecological environment of the internet industry and the development pattern of media. In this context of integrated development of media, Nankai University has taken the initiative to establish the College of Journalism and Communication in 2019. With the two newly established undergraduate majors this time, we will explore the educational innovation of multidisciplinary cross-integration of journalism and communication under the context of the new liberal arts and will strive to cultivate students with interdisciplinary talent with a Marxist outlook on news and a macro vision of the social information system. This approach will help students becoming able to embrace the future evolution in this merge media era and the reforming environment, while having ability, knowledge and literacy in order to meet the requirement of news dissemination, public opinion response a of the new format of the media industry. The duration of study is 4 years and the graduates will be awarded a Bachelor degree of Arts.

The major of Crypto Science and Technology will be set up in the School of Cyberspace Security, aiming to cultivate senior engineering and technical talents and industry backbones in the field of cryptography. Students are expected to systematically master the basic theory of information security, the basic theory of cryptography, security protocol design, data security and privacy protection technology, while being provided with talent support for the independent innovation and infrastructure construction of our country’s network security. The study career will last for 4 years and graduates will be awarded a Bachelor degree in Engineering.  

It is reported that the new majors will follow the specific requirements of the “Nankai University First-Class Undergraduate Quality Improvement Plan (2019-2021)”(40 undergraduate education reforms), will carry forward the traditional advantage of Nankai undergraduate education in the new era and comprehensively deepen the education and teaching reforms, will continue to promote the construction of first-class undergraduate majors, take the growth of students as the starting and end point, guide students to serve the country and society, and will cultivate newcomer of this era who has spirit of dedication to public interests as well as an all-round capability.
