This year marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of the international mathematics master Prof. Shiing-Shen Chern. On June 8, more than 70 rare handwritings of Prof. Chern were exhibited at the Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University.

Organized by the Chern Institute of Mathematics, Prof. Shiing-Shen Chern's Handwriting Exhibition displays Prof. Chern’s handwritings of three themes in the form of exhibition boards: inscriptions for universities and research institutes, letters to relatives and friends, essays, etc. Many of these handwritings are being displayed for the first time.

Prof. Chern is an internationally renowned mathematician, educator, and a world-recognized master of mathematics. His pioneering contributions in differential geometry and topology, especially in the field of overall differential geometry research, have far-reaching influence; thus he is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in the 20th century, as well as the father of overall differential geometry. Prof. Chern founded the Nankai Institute of Mathematics in 1985. Under his auspices and advocacy, the Institute adheres to the mission of based at Nankai, serving the country, and embracing the world, in order to cultivate a group of outstanding mathematics talents who can sit on an equal footing with other countries in the world. Prof. Chern and the Institute invited world-class mathematicians to give lectures and hold a series of international academic conferences, winning a high reputation for Nankai Mathematics in the country and in the whole world, making Nankai a banner of Chinese mathematics.

Yang Qingshan said Today we commemorate and cherish the memory of Prof. Chern, so as to get encouraged and motivated by his patriotism and thus continue to shoulder the responsibilities and missions entrusted to us in the new era with ceaseless efforts, passing the torch of Nankai Mathematics and Chern Institute of Mathematics.

This year marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of the international mathematics master Prof. Chern. In order to cherish the memory of  Prof. Chern, the Chern Institute of Mathematics defined this year as The Year of Chern, and planned a series of activities to commemorate the 110th anniversary. Prof. Shiing-Shen Chern's Handwriting Exhibition is one of the main activities of the commemoration. The exhibition will last until August 31.
