Ceremony for Book Donation to Columbia University Held

On September 11, the Ceremony for Book Donation from Nankai University and Chang Poling Research Association to Columbia University was held via video conference at Nankai University. Cao Xuetao, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Nankai University, and Zhang Yuanlong, grandson of Mr. Zhang Boling (Chang Poling) and advisor of Chang Poling and Yan Xiu Research Association, jointly presented the recently published book Teacher with Classic Works- Zhang Boling in Modern Newspapers (volume 1 and 2) to Columbia University. Representatives from Columbia University accepted the books online.

Cao Xuetao said that the two sides will strengthen the interaction of research in the future and further enhance the educational and cultural exchange between the two universities and even the two countries. Staffs from Nankai University will continue to uphold the excellent schooling philosophy of former educators such as President Zhang Boling, accelerate the pursuit of excellence of Nankai, and cultivate more talents who are dedicated to public interests with acquisition of all-round capability and global vision. Nankai University is willing to work with Columbia University to continue to strengthen in-depth cooperation in the areas of student and faculty exchange and scientific research cooperation, jointly contributing to the development of global higher education.

Zhang Yuanlong said at the ceremony, Chang Poling Research Association has focused on the research of Zhang Boling's educational thought for nearly 20 years, and has issued a large number of publications and research results. In this way, it provides a lot of materials for the study of modern education in China and put the educational philosophy and experiences of President Zhang Boling into educational practice. The deepening of education reform requires the reference to the world's experience of educational innovation. We hope to take advantage of today's event to strengthen the cooperation and exchange between Nankai University and Columbia University, and to open up the discussion on new ways of global education governance.

Professor Stephanie Rowley, Executive Vice Dean and Provost of Teachers College of Columbia University said, as a pioneer of modern education in China, Mr. Zhang Boling has made outstanding contributions to education in China and cultural exchanges between China and the United States, and he has significant international influence. I am pleased and truly appreciate the generous donation from Nankai University and Chang Poling Research Association.

At the book donation ceremony, Yang Jun, Counselor of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, Cheng He'nan, Executive Director of the Center for Chinese Education at Columbia University, Xiao Guangwen, Director of Nankai University's History Research Office, Henry Levin, Chief Advisor of the Center for Chinese Education at Columbia University, Alex Eble, Professor of Teachers College of Columbia University, Zhang Zhongxian, Research Fellow and Vice President of Chang Poling Research Association, and He Yong, President of the China Institute - Renwen Society, also expressed their congratulations and delivered speeches online and offline. On behalf of co-editor Prof. Liang Jisheng, Zhang Lanpu, research librarian of Archives of Nankai University and editor of Teacher with Classic Works - Zhang Boling in Modern Newspapers, presented a poem.

Teacher with Classic Works- Zhang Boling in Modern Newspapers was planned by Chang Poling Research Association and published by Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences Press. Cao Xuetao wrote the preface, Zhang Yuanlong wrote the foreword, and Nankai University archivist Zhang Lanpu and school history researcher Liang Jisheng co-edited the book.

The book has 750,000 Chinese characters in total, and the editors selected 296 articles published by Mr. Zhang Boling's contemporaries from more than 6,000 related articles in more than 70 newspapers in the late Qing Dynasty, Republic of China and early People's Republic of China, spanning more than 40 years (from 1908 to 1949), accompanying Mr. Zhang's lifelong education career. The book focuses on the impression of Mr. Zhang Boling's contemporaries during his lifetime and his extensive influence on society, and also provides a context of on-site restoration for understanding and studying the thoughts of Zhang Boling.
