On the morning of September 13, Ge Molin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University, gave a lecture to the freshmen of the Experimental Science Class (focused on mathematical science and big data) with the theme of Enhance the learning of mathematical foundation courses to better assisst China's scientific and technological innovation.
Starting from the connotation and characteristics of physics and the relationship between Mathematics and physics, academician Ge Molin briefly reviewed the development history of physics and its four pillars, and emphasized the characteristics and important applications of the cross-integration of physics and other disciplines. He said that physics is the mother of technology and the knowledge of guess and experiment. Meanwhile, mathematics is not only an expression of physics, but also a prediction.
Ge Molin recalled the important contributions of Shiing-Shen Chern, Chen-Ning Yang, Mu Guoguang, Hu Guoding and other predecessors to mathematics and physics of Nankai University. He also talked about a number of cutting-edge applications of high energy physics such as proton accelerator and free electron laser. He hoped that students could learn from the mathematicians and physicians, pay attention to the important applications of mathematics and physics in various fields, apply mathematical knowledge to the key fields of national economic development.
Ge Molin put forward suggestions to the freshmen from five aspects: making reflections on experiments, learning to guess and ask, often thinking with examples, referring to literatures and attaching importance to interdisciplinary application. He also quoted Mr. Shiing-Shen Chern's formula of success: Interest - diligence - comprehension - creation - characteristics - opportunity, to encourage students to study hard in Nankai University.
