Nankai University Professor Invited to Give a Report at the 73rd Annual Meeting of the ISE

2022-10-20

The 73rd Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) was held online from September 12 to 16. At the invitation of the organizing committee, Chen Jun,  academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fellow of the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries and a professor of Nankai University, made a one-hour report entitled "Organic Electrode Materials for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries and Beyond". Professor Marc Koper, President of the ISE, fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and a professor of Leiden University, presided over the meeting. Professor Chen Jun is the first Chinese scholar invited to give a one-hour report at the ISE annual meeting.

In the report, Chen Jun introduced the academic frontiers, social needs and key significance of energy storage and electrochemical energy storage and organic electrode materials as well as batteries. Regarding the bottleneck problems of organic molecules freely soluble in organic electrolyte, low conductivity, low working voltage and low utilization rate of active sites, he introduced the molecular design such as the introduction of heteroatoms and electron withdrawing groups, polymerization and salt formation, multi-active site coupling, polymerization and big conjugated system building, as well as electrolyte optimization and other improvement means. Chen Jun explained the application of organic electrode materials to storage batteries with lithium, sodium, zinc and protons as carriers. Finally, he summarized the key scientific and technical issues in the R&D of organic batteries, and discussed the application prospects.

The Annual Meeting of the ISE, which has been held for 73 years, has become the highest-level global academic conference on electrochemistry, drawing a wealth of scholars from around the world. The meeting was originally scheduled to be organized by Xiamen University. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held online at ISE headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. It set up five one-hour report conferences. The other four persons making the reports were Professor Yury Gogotsi of Drexel University in the United States, Professor Edward Sargent of the University of Toronto in Canada, Professor Jacek Lipkowski of the University of Guelph in Canada and Professor Elena Savinova of the University of Strasbourg in France.
