Recently, the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry of Nankai University, the first organic chemistry research institute of Chinese universities, celebrated its 60th anniversary. On November 5, the celebration conference was held at NKU's Balitai Campus.

Academicians Tian He, Zhang Lihe, Tong Zhenhe, Huang Naizheng, Ma Shengming, Tu Yongqiang, Song Bao’an, Tang Yong, Xi Zhenfeng, Xie Zuowei, Sun Jinsheng, Wu Lizhu, and Wang Meixiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, professor Zhang Deqing and Fan Qinghua from the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and professor You Shuli from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc., attended the conference.

Chen Yulu, President of Nankai University, delivered a speech at the conference, and also present were Vice President Li Jing, Vice President Chen Jun, academicians Cheng Jinpei and Zhou Qilin from the College of Chemistry, and academician Bu Xianhe, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering.

On behalf of the university, Chen Yulu extended a warm welcome to the guests and alumni. He said that the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry has established two national scientific research platforms, namely State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry and the National Engineering Research Center of Pesticides (Tianjin) in the past 60 years, cultivated many contemporary outstanding scientists and produced a multitude of major scientific research results. When inspecting Nankai University on January 17, 2019, President Xi Jinping specially inspected the College of Chemistry and the State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry. He stressed the need to move faster to build a first-class university and first-class disciplines, strengthen basic research, strive for more achievements in original innovation and independent innovation, and scale new heights in science and technology.

Commissioned by academician Yao Jiannian, Chairman of the Chinese Chemical Society,  Tian He read the congratulatory letter on behalf of the Chinese Chemical Society

Xi Zhenfeng delivered a speech as the Director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry

Zhang Deqing, Director of the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Luo Sanzhong, Deputy Director of the Department of Chemistry of Tsinghua University, delivered speeches on behalf of sister institutes

Academician Sun Jinsheng of China University of Petroleum and Zhao Guofeng, Chairman of Tianjin Jiuri New Material Technology Co., Ltd., gave speeches on behalf of alumni

Zhou Chuanzheng, a research fellow at the College of Chemistry, and Li Mingming, a doctoral student enrolled in 2018, spoke on behalf of teachers and students

At the conference, the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry received a donation of 3.95 million yuan, which will be used for the discipline construction, scientific research and talent training for the Institute.

Dr. Liu Xiaotao, Executive Deputy General Manager of Wanxiang Technology Co., Ltd., and Zheng Baofu, an alumnus enrolled in 1997 and Chairman of Shanghai Haoyuan Chemexpress Co., Ltd., delivered speeches as donor representatives

At the conference, Professor Cui Chunming, Director of the NKU Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry, reviewed the 60-year history of the Institute. He mentioned that the Institute has conducted research in many areas such as pesticide chemistry and pesticide biology, physical organic chemistry, metal-organic chemistry, organic synthetic chemistry, heteroatom organic chemistry, chemical biology and organic analytical chemistry, and has cultivated a wealth of outstanding talents represented by academicians Chen Ruyu and Li Zhengming. It has won more than 20 major awards such as the National Science Conference Award, the first prize of the National Natural Science Award, and the first prize of the National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology. In recent years, the Institute has focused on the creation of new substances, carried out innovative research in three key areas of elemento-organic compounds, ecological pesticides and organic molecular materials, and undertaken many national key scientific research projects.
