Professor Gong Ke Visited Specialized Agencies of the United Nations

Recently, Gong Ke, Former President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and Director of the Academic Committee of Nankai University, was invited to visit the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the  Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to expand and foster cooperation with the UN specialized agencies in the field of international science, technology and education governance. 

Gong Ke visited the ITU and met with Zhao Houlin, Secretary-General of the ITU. Zhao Houlin thanked Chinese scientists and universities for their participation in the work of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and suggested closer cooperation and exchanges in international science and technology governance in the field of telecommunications. On the visit to the FAO, Gong Ke met with Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the FAO and the two sides introduced the efforts made by the FAO and the WFEO respectively in the fields of food security and agricultural scientific and technological innovation, and discussed the areas of deep bilateral cooperation in the future.

Then, Gong Ke went to Paris, France for the Executive Bureau meeting of the WFEO, the meeting of working committees and the International Members' Forum. During the period, Gong Ke attended the information meeting of missions of UNESCO member states at UNESCO headquarters, reported on the work of the WFEO in the field of engineering, and introduced the "UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development", the revision of the UNESCO's Engineering Report for Sustainable Development, Framework of Global Evaluation Standards for Engineering Education and Vocational Competency, etc. Gong Ke also visited the headquarters of the UNIDO and held talks with Zou Ciyong, Executive Director-General of UNIDO. The two sides exchanged views on how to achieve inclusive and sustainable industrial development in such fields as new energy, food security, and vocational education. 

During the visit, Gong Ke also visited the Chinese Embassy in France and the University of  Graz, Austria, a partner university of Nankai University, and met with Chen Li, Minister of the Chinese Embassy in France, Zhou Jiagui, Education Counselor, as well as Peter Riedler, Rector of the University of  Graz.
