2023-03-23

The third edition of Optics co-edited by Mr. Mu Guoguang and Mr. Zhan Yuanling was published recently by Higher Education Press.

The book Optics is positioned as a basic textbook on physical optics and a self-study reference book for scientists and technicians. It can be divided into three parts: geometrical optics and basic principles of optical instruments, wave optics and its important applications in work, life and technology, as well as photonics and the basic principles of laser and quantum optics. The book provides a balanced introduction to the basic theory of optics as well as technical principles of optical instruments and their applications, and it covers the main content of China’s optics courses. Featuring basic concepts and basic principles based on physical experiments and phenomena, the book gives a solid foundation in science and covers extensive knowledge with consideration to practical application. Optics offers a systematic basic knowledge of optics for undergraduates studying physics, optoelectronic information, etc., and also acts as a springboard material for graduate students to study cutting-edge and professional theories and technologies. It also serves as a useful reference book for students or researchers working on interdisciplinary projects who need to understand optical phenomena and basic principles.

Academician Gong Qihuang, the former chairman of the Chinese Optical Society and the current president of Peking University, gave strong support to the revision of this book and wrote the preface.

A total of over 300,000 copies of Optics have been published since its first edition more than 40 years ago. The book has benefited many scholars engaged in the application and study of optical science as a textbook of physics and optoelectronic information majors in universities across the country, and been collected by many scientific and technological workers.
