From March 17 to 19, the 4th CAST Young Talent Nurturing Program and Talent Development Forum and the 7th China Youth Forum on Operations Research were held in Tianjin. The forum was hosted by the Operations Research Society of China and co-organized by the Youth Working Committee of the Operations Research Society of China and the School of Statistics and Data Science of Nankai University. The forum was attended by dozens of experts and scholars from higher education institutions and research institutes, including the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beihang University, Nankai University, Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Southern University of Science and Technology, and East China Normal University.

Chen Yulu, President of Nankai University; Ma Zhiming, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences, and Dean of the School of Statistics and Data Science at Nankai University; and Yuan Yaxiang, Vice Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Chen Xujin, a researcher at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Secretary-general of the Operations Research Society of China, presided over the opening ceremony.

In his speech, President Chen Yulu stated that Nankai University is currently focusing on creating frontier theories and methods in statistics, strengthening interdisciplinary integration, making breakthroughs in core technologies, and accelerating independent and original innovation. Nankai University expects to further deepen cooperation with China Association for Science and Technology and the Operations Research Society of China to jointly serve the country its most fundamental interests.

Academician Ma Zhiming introduced the development history of the statistics discipline at Nankai University and highlighted the characteristic of the School of Statistics and Data Science, which places a great emphasis on interdisciplinary integration and has a relatively young faculty and research team.

Academician Yuan Yaxiang congratulated the School of Statistics and Data Science on its development and looked forward to its greater role in the development of operations research in China.

At this forum, Dr. Wang Xiao and Dr. Wang Changjun, the forth cohort of talent recipients,  made reports on their research projects and achievements, future work plans, and their experience with the “Youth Talent Nurturing Program.

The forum also featured an academic report titled “Optimal subsampling via predictive inference” by Professor Zou Changliang, Dean of the Institute of Statistics and Deputy Dean of the School of Statistics and Data Science at Nankai University. The report elaborated on data analysis, modeling, optimization of statistical properties from various perspectives and engaged in discussions with the experts present on related issues. 

At the forum, the experts and scholars made excellent academic reports and speeches on various hot research topics in the field of operations research, such as discrete optimization, augmented Lagrangian method, spectral radius of graphs, algorithm for privacy protection, queuing priority purchase, and design of survivable network.
