Recently, the 7th China Enterprise Reform and Development Summit and Press Conference for Results, hosted by China Enterprise Reform and Development Society, was held in Beijing. Outstanding achievements of the 7th China Enterprise Reform and Development Session were announced at the conference. The “Research on the Governance Quality of China’s Listed Financial Institutions - Analysis Based on the Governance Index of China’s Listed Companies” won the first prize. The project was primarily implemented by Li Wei’an, a chair professor at Nankai University and president of China Academy of Corporate Governance, and Hao Chen, director of the Financial Institution Governance Research Office of China Academy of Corporate Governance and an associate professor at the Financial Management Department of Nankai Business School. This is the second time that Nankai University won this honor after the team of China Institute of Corporate Governance won the first prize at the 3rd China Enterprise Reform and Development Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019.

Based on the Chinese Corporate Governance Index (CCGINK, also named Nankai Governance Index), which is known as the “barometer” of the governance status of China’s listed companies, this award-winning research project fully evaluated the quality of governance of China’s listed financial institutions in 2023 in terms of overall analysis, dimension analysis, controlling shareholder nature analysis, regional analysis, industry analysis, and annual analysis. It revealed the practical situation of the governance of financial institutions in China as well as the formation and distribution of governance risks.

The award-winning research also put forward countermeasures for improving the governance of China’s listed financial institutions: to promote the governance of financial institutions from “effective in form” to “effective in substance”, to start with the prevention of governance risks of financial institutions to resolve systemic financial risks, to introduce the third-party governance evaluation system of financial institutions and play the role of governance benchmarking, to promote financial institutions to progress from green finance to green governance, and to improve green governance of financial institutions.
