On October 17, during the Nankai University’s 105th-anniversary celebration, the event “Face-to-Face with Professor András Vasy, Chair of Department of Mathematics at Stanford University” was successfully held at the Shiing-Shen Building on the Balitai Campus. The event, spearheaded by Zhang Wenzhong, Distinguished Professor at Nankai University and Chairman of Nankai Alumni Business Association, featured a mix of in-person and online participation. Bai Chengming, Vice President of Nankai University attended the event, as well as Long Yiming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor at the Chern Institute of Mathematics, and Zhou Haibing, Tenured Trustee at Nankai University and Co-Chairman of the Nankai Alumni Business Association, who joined online. The event was chaired by Professor Zhang Wenzhong.
Over 200 faculty members and students from the Chern Institute of Mathematics, the School of Mathematical Sciences, the Center for Combinatorics, and the School of Statistics and Data Science, as well as gold, silver, and bronze medalists from the Chinese Mathematical Olympiad, attended the event.
Academician Long Yiming introduced the history of Nankai’s mathematics discipline and highlighted its contributions in cultivating exceptional mathematicians.
On behalf of the Mathematic Discipline at Nankai, Bai Chengming expressed sincere appreciation to Zhang Wenzhong and Department of Mathematics at Stanford University for their support.
Professor András Vasy welcomed Nankai students to pursue Ph.D. studies at Department of Mathematics and introduced the esteemed experts present at the event.
Professor Jonathan Wing-hong Luk, renowned for his work in nonlinear partial differential equations, presented an overview of the Department of Mathematics, highlighting its robust faculty, state-of-the-art research environment, and opportunities for international students. His presentation showcased the department’s achievements in both mathematical research and talent development.
Professor Jan Vondrák, renowned for his work in probability and combinatorics, shared recent breakthroughs in the field and explored critical issues driving current research.
Professor Richard Taylor, renowned for his work in number theory, elaborated on key research themes in the field and introduced the Department’s number theory research group.
Professor Yakov Eliashberg, a Wolf Prize laureate and leading expert in symplectic geometry and topology, concluded with an engaging visual presentation of immersions of manifolds, a fundamental topic in his field.
The interactive session, moderated by Professor Guo Shaoming, Chair Professor at the Chern Institute of Mathematics, encouraged students to engage directly with professors at the Department of Mathematics in Stanford University, who offered detailed and insightful responses to their questions.
Heads and representatives from the Chern Institute of Mathematics, the School of Mathematical Sciences, the Center for Combinatorics, and the School of Statistics and Data Science also attended the event.
