On May 24, Nankai University (NKU) convened the 4th “Carbon Neutrality” Technology Week at the Tianjin University-Nankai University Union Building. The event was co-organized by the State Key Laboratory of Special Functional Chemical Power Sources (the “Laboratory”), NKU College of Chemistry, and the journal eScience. Chen Jun, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President of NKU, and Director of the Laboratory, attended the event and delivered a keynote address. Students from Tianjin’s primary and secondary schools, including Tianjin Nankai High School, Tian Experimental High School, Xinhua Middle School, Tianjin Xianshuigu No.4 Middle School, and Nankai University Affiliated Primary School, attended the event.
Chen extended a warm welcome to the attendees on behalf of NKU. He reviewed the university’s century-long legacy in education and highlighted the pivotal role of carbon neutrality as a national priority and its transformative impact across new energy storage technologies, electric vehicles, low-altitude economy, major national projects, and other fields. He also encouraged students to contribute to a carbon-neutral society.
Liu Jiangtao, Chief Research Scientist at Guizhou Meiling Power Sources Co., Ltd. and Deputy Director of the Laboratory; Zhang Kai, Deputy Director of the Laboratory; Wang Huan, researcher at the Laboratory; and Zhao Yu, Senior Engineer of NKU College of Chemistry, delivered speeches entitled “Spacecraft Power Technologies & Applications” “New Energy BatteriesDecoding the Energy Secrets of Carbon Allotropes” and “Green Fuel from Fields” respectively. They focused on national major needs and cutting-edge advances in new energy technologies with the professional yet accessible explanations of the scientific principles and technological applications behind carbon neutrality.
Professors and graduate students from the Laboratory designed hands-on DIY experiments that blended scientific principles with interactive fun. After completing the experiments, students enthusiastically shared their feelings and aspirations for the science outreach initiative in the feedback section.
Now in its fourth consecutive year, the “Carbon Neutrality” science outreach initiative has taken a youth-focused approach with its 2025 theme: “Zero-Carbon Futures Empowered by Cutting-Edge Technology.” The initiative has incorporated hands-on experiments to ignite scientific curiosity among teenage participants.
