On April 20, the 2025 Tianjin Science and Technology Award was announced, with 26 research achievements from Nankai University receiving awards. Among them, 15 awards were granted to projects for which Nankai University served as the principal institution, including one Special Prize, five First Prizes, and nine Second Prizes, highlighting the university’s strong capabilities in both basic research and applied technology.
A project on the structural and performance regulation of low-dimensional hybrid semiconductor materials, led by Professor Yuan Mingjian from the College of Chemistry, won the Special Prize in Natural Sciences. Three projects led respectively by Professors Tang Zizhou from the Chern Institute of Mathematics, Cheng Mingming from the College of Computer Science, and Tian Jianguo from the School of Physics each received a First Prize in Natural Sciences. Two projects led by Professors Sun Hongwen from the College of Environmental Science and Engineering and Wang Shuo from the School of Medicine were both awarded First Prizes in Scientific and Technological Progress.
The First Affiliated Hospital of Nankai University received three awards in total. Among them, a project on the development and clinical application of a diagnostic and treatment system for lateral lymph node metastasis in rectal cancer, led by Director Sun Yi, won a Second Prize in Scientific and Technological Progress.
The award-winning projects span a wide range of fields, including materials science, fundamental mathematics, physics, information technology, environmental science, medicine and food science. In basic research, they focused on original theories and key scientific chanllenges. In applied technology, they addressed major national needs and pressing industry pain point, achieving technological breakthroughs and industrial applications in areas such as ecological restoration, healthcare, and food safety, with significant economic and social benefits. Meanwhile, several projects also advanced medical-engineering integration, university-enterprise collaboration and joint research across Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, forming the complete chain from industry and academia through research to application.
